European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.

Other Developments in the News

In other legal developments:

  • A US district judge has blocked attempts to cut federal homeland security funding to local governments that do not comply with specific federal immigration rules. The judge stated the case was “a further instance” of linking federal aid to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the deployment of 350 national guard members to a major US city ahead of the new year, alongside an ongoing border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to take in a limited number of individuals from the US in exchange for additional aid, after concluding a formal agreement with Washington.

Additionally, a Democratic lawmaker has filed a lawsuit to demand the stripping of the current president’s name from a well-known cultural institution in Washington DC.

Analysts point out that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources reflect a wider ideology in certain circles of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with historical international strategies.
