RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation targeting an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, located using surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes used Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a number of approach shafts leading to the site... preliminary assessments are that the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the strike late on Saturday and every plane involved returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - also known as Daesh - imposed militant control over parts of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores the UK's leading role, and resolve to operate in unison with allied nations, to eliminate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary John Healey said.

UK warplanes have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State following its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to every member of our armed forces involved in this strike for their skill and their bravery," Healey added. "They were among thousands of British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove militants who endanger our safety, demonstrates how our armed forces are always on standby, all year round, keeping Britain secure at home and strong abroad."

During December, the United States armed forces carried out what it termed a "massive strike" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an assault killed two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates Islamic State still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in both countries.
